Our Investment Philosophy

McLean Wealth Management focuses on relaying only tailored investment management recommendations. Our role is truly nonpartisan in regard to vendors and with an emphasis on guiding clients through the motions and maintenance of a sensible and intelligent investment plan. We believe that strategic consulting and execution of a well-designed investment plan are essential in increasing the utility for our clients.

McLean Wealth Management strives to always have an empathetic perspective toward our client, for it is the client’s side of the table we sit on. We recommend additional services only when they are in the best interest of the client. A large value of the style of this structure is the reduced overall costs our clients receive when they are paying for only what they use and need unlike other firms that lump a variety of services in an all-inclusive retainer.

We follow a disciplined, procedurally rigorous five-step process to help safeguard that all facets of a client's navigational plan follow a smart and easy to digest strategy. Our navigation plan is the same as that implemented by one of America's largest Money Managers. With no shortcuts, or automated solutions, attention is focused on the clients' specific needs so that they are given the pertinent information and education essential to make informed investment decisions.

Our Investment Process

McLean Wealth Management strives to always have an empathetic perspective toward our client, for it is the client’s side of the table we sit on. We recommend additional services only when they are in the best interest of the client. A large value of the style of this structure is the reduced overall costs our clients receive when they are paying for only what they use and need unlike other firms that lump a variety of services in an all-inclusive retainer.

STEP ONE: GETTING TO KNOW YOU

First, we outline your unique financial scenario

During this stage, we encourage our clients to "lay everything on the table" in order for McLean Wealth Management to gain a holistic picture of our client’s scenario and design a portfolio structure that uniquely fits their special circumstances. Details about investment and administrative goals, objectives and needs, investment horizon and appetite for risk are disclosed. Additionally, we take special notation of financial, regulatory, legal and/or social constraints the client may have. There is no consulting that takes place during this initial fact finding interview.

This data gathering process includes, but is not limited to, an understanding of the:

  • Investment objectives and preferences
  • Risk tolerance parameters
  • Asset allocation
  • Legal and other constraints
  • Net cash flow requirements
  • Administration and custody arrangements
  • Current money managers’ performance
  • Current money managers’ investment process
  • Current fee structure

This process is critical in order to begin the next step of strategic consulting. The information gathered at this step is used as the foundation for all subsequent decisions regarding the investment program.

STEP TWO: STRATEGIC PORTFOLIO DESIGN

Second, we engineer an allocation plan that will actualize financial goals.

Once we have all the integral parts to the client’s financial picture it is off to the drawing board to design an optimal portfolio. We strive to optimize assets through a well designed program that provides the client with insight into the trade-offs between risk and return. Asset allocation strategies that have the most promising probability of meeting needs are developed and diversification education is offered to give an understanding of these simulations.

Our asset allocation model report will include a detailed analysis to help the client predict future market performance by showing a trailing history of the asset classes. A reflection is made for the asset classes on returns, risks and the correlations between the classes. A collection of eight models are included that are spread across the risk/return spectrum to serve as the foundation of the clients portfolio are provided by Janney’s Investment Strategy Group.

STEP THREE: CALL TO ACTION

Third, we prepare a written implementation checklist that serves as a "To Do" list to execute the plan in a timely manner.

The Implementation Plan is an invaluable strategic planning tool for investment management created by a number of specialists at Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC. McLean Wealth Management views the Implementation Plan as a working document, the contents of which will change in unison with any changes made to the asset allocation variables described above. The implementation Plan serves to clearly articulate the actions required in investment plan and highlights parameters for all concerned.

STEP FOUR: SELECTING MANAGERS

Fourth, we hand pick the most compatible managers for each asset class and investment style.

The client’s needs are McLean Wealth Management’s focus and objectivity is a necessity during the selection process of money managers. We connect to the money managers available to us through our affiliation with Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC. Janney enables McLean Wealth Management to comprehend the breadth of Money Managers and narrow down the best specialists for each asset class.

Janney Montgomery Scott conducts a thorough screening process to analyze each manager quantitatively and qualitatively. These critical factors are considered not only when the market is performing well, but also when the market is lagging. History of performance and length of track record, current assets that are being managed, statistics on risk and fees are all taken into consideration on a quantitative observation. The manager’s reputation, client base, accessibility, management style and service to clients are considered qualitatively.

STEP FIVE: CHARTING THE COURSE

Fifth, we maintain rigorous supervision to insure that your portfolio achieves its investment goals.

McLean Wealth Management prides itself in its regular utilization of the Quarterly Client Navigation Map throughout the investment process. Seeking to measure the absolute and relative performance results of every investment manager involved in the clients portfolio, we conduct performance evaluations with our clients every three months. The goal of these meetings is to work collaboratively with the client in monitoring performance through benchmarks and guidelines.

We discuss with the clients why performance results were actualized and identify adjustments that need to be made along the way. McLean Wealth Management believes that in order to maintain optimal performance and manage risk this quarterly navigation map is essential. During these meetings interpretations and insights are offered and include but are not limited to

  • A review of the client’s current investment program
  • An asset allocation analysis
  • An implementation plan
  • Election of compatible Investment Managers
  • Review of investment plan
  • Performance monitoring
